Frank Yustard
Painter

“Art is the revolution of the imagination to substantial creativity.”

Born and Bread in Bongo (the slang for Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital of Tanzania). Frank, a native of Bukoba, first born of four children was always a curious child and loved learning and creating new things. He had the privilege of attending an artistic training at the Dar Art Youth (DAY) center. This is where his art journey began. His fascination with colours made him pursue a career in the arts. He was greatly inspired by his mentor Ernest Mtaya and the great Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso.

Observational drawing is his favorite genre –he enjoys observing things with their real features and recreates them predominantly using oil colors. On top of illustrating the beauty and the realities of the world, Frank’s work has a humanitarian aspect with a call for action message behind most of his pieces. He loves the freedom art gives in expressing one’s self, as he puts it, “art gives you freedom, intelligence and logic, and thereafter creates something that can impact the world in one way or the other.”

There is power – some sort of magic – on the paint brush that invigorates Frank to play with angles, colour and light, in order to bring life to a still image. Let it be food, landscapes, animals, portraits, his subject matter vary but his focus point remains the same.

Frank’s dream is that in the next 20 years, is to see an uprising in the Tanzanian art scene. As a painter and a teacher, he hopes to have a space where he can merge his two professions and bring together young aspiring artists and develop their talents. Frank has been successful in making a living through art and even built a home with his earnings. Outside work, he loves music and he is a huge fan of action movies.

Critique from the Gallery

Frank’s keen use of color and brushwork is expertly demonstrated in his paintings, which demonstrate an impressionistic approach to his treatment of light and texture of his subjects. That results in a vivacious depiction of the natural landscapes and portraits he captures. From the splashing waves of sandy/rocky beaches and majestic wildlife lurking in the shrubby savanna, to even the meticulous rendering of his still lifes. Frank’s subjects are often captured in a perceptive manner akin to the likes of Monet and Renoir, that appear true to life in respect to the nature of their function and natural setting. Combined with a keen sense of lighting and color to accentuate the broad tones and texture of the subject and its surroundings to make a refined yet authentic depiction of the people, places and objects he chooses to capture.
