Born (1991) in Tanzania, Asteria Malinzi is a fine art and documentary photographer. Using historical and nautical references as devices to inform her projects and personal circumstances. She uses the ocean as a medium to reflect on time, history, memory and psychological experiences in her work.
She produces photographic series that tell personal narratives that investigate her intimate relationships, her quest for bearing and belonging, and her anxieties about the unknown and the known. She looks at how we form identity, her own in particular. Using film photography to recall the aesthetics of colonial and anthropological photography.
She completed her BA (Hons) in Business Management and Marketing at the University of Derby in 2012. She then went on to pursue photography and relocated to Cape Town, where she graduated from ORMS Cape Town School of Photography. Since graduating, she has participated in several group exhibitions in South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and Egypt. She is currently based in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.
