Thomas January was born on the coast of Kibiti. He began to love art from his childhood. During an interview, he told us that he so desired to be a great painter and sculptor. When he got the honor to meet and be an apprentice with the infamous Augustino Malaba (Makonde sculptor). It was he, who inspired, motivated, and made him who he is today.
Thomas wouldn't consider his work with one particular style - each piece is different and unique in its own way. When he starts carving, his hands usually lead the way and in the heat of the moment, something aesthetic comes to life.
Thomas is a big fan of other local artists who inspires and makes him want to enhance his talent; some of these artists are Evarist Chikawe and Ntila. The message he tries to convey through his art is to educate and raise awareness to the public about the arts, to teach the community to make a habit of constantly exploring and supporting the arts. He concurs with many that art is life and it is a part of our daily lives; it is where paintings and sculptures derive its innate inspiration. Often touching and connecting people to the very core of their hearts. What would make him happy is to see art being taught in the local schools because it is equally as important as other subjects.
He believes he has not reached the pinnacle point in his career for him to consider himself successful, but he intends to work very hard to reach his goals. Besides sculpting, Thomas warmly smiles and says he enjoys playing football.
